A traveller encampment has moved on from a cricket club and pitched up in Southend.

The group, who arrived at Rawreth Cricket Club on Wednesday, are believed to be the same travellers who set up at Jones Memorial Recreation Ground, on Eastern Avenue, yesterday afternoon.

Four caravans were spotted arriving at the Southend site, after the group were moved on from Rawreth by Rochford Council.

Southend Council have confirmed that they are aware of the encampment and visited the site yesterday to serve the first notices to move them on.

Councillor Martin Terry, cabinet member for community safety, says: “We were made aware of an unauthorised encampment yesterday afternoon, with officers acting swiftly to visit the site and issue the relevant notices to leave and undertake welfare checks as is necessary.

“I understand that police visited the site this morning to issue a section 61 notice requiring the encampment to leave the site.”

A spokesperson from Rochford Council, said: "I can confirm the travellers from Rawreth have moved on, we believe to an area in Southend."

It comes as traveller encampments remain at Rayleigh Leisure Centre and Asda, both on Rawreth Lane in Rayleigh, after too arriving on Wednesday.

Asda bosses have sinced confirmed that an eviction notice was served by the council on Wednesday to get the ball rolling to move them on, with Rochford Council and the Essex Countrywide Traveller Unit (ECTU) also working to move travellers on from the Rayleigh Leisure Centre car park.
