THE coronavirus pandemic has put financial strain on businesses across the country, with some even being forced to shut their doors for good, but the Utopia Coffee Lounge is refusing to give up what makes it unique.
Utopia is situated in the heart of Southend thanks to its location in the Royals Shopping Centre.
The initial Covid-19 outbreak resulted in businesses, such as Utopia, being forced to lock their doors for a prolonged period of time.
Traders looked at where they could save money in order to stay alive, but Utopia is proud to have reopened with the same unique edge it enjoyed before the deadly virus first hit south Essex.
Gerry O’Grady, co-owner of the store, said: “Utopia is a quirky, cosy independent coffee shop in the heart of Southend town centre.
Firm favourite - the Utopia Coffee Lounge can be found in the heart of Southend
“We are the only coffee shop in the area who roast all their own coffee, right in the shop, on a daily basis.
“That means we serve the best coffee in Southend - there is no contest.”
But it is not just the fresh taste of coffee which attracts the south Essex community to Utopia.
Gerry added: “Customers are sure to find a friendly welcome along with some freshly made sandwiches and plenty of generously home-baked cakes.
“We offer books and board games to help customers relax in our comfortable chairs and enjoy themselves whether they are with friends or visiting alone.

“There is lots to look at while customers are enjoying their time with us, with retro and vintage games evoking memories from their childhood.”
Utopia is situated over two floors, with the upstairs area being a hideaway for those looking to enjoy some time alone.
While many of us cannot get away from technology for an extended period of time due to working on laptops or endlessly scrolling through social media on our phones, Utopia does not offer Wifi as they encourage customers to switch off from the outside world when they visit.
Reflecting success - the Utopia Coffee Lounge roasts its own coffee daily
Although Utopia is known for its fresh coffee, there are extensive options of what to drink and your four-legged friends can visit as well.
Gerry, who has co-owned Utopia for over three years with Teresa Hindle, revealed: “We have a great selection of teas and over 30 different milkshake flavours.
“Utopia is dog friendly and we even have free biscuits to treat your dog to.
“The vegan community are also catered for, with plenty of vegan food options and the vegan milkshakes are the best you will find in Southend.”
Every week we will be unveiling our Trader of the Week as we look to champion local businesses across south Essex. To nominate your own business or somewhere you enjoy visiting, simply complete our online form.
