A TWO-hour stand-off took place in the middle of a residential street as riot police flooded the area.

Essex Police were called to a property in Napier Avenue at around 3.50pm on Sunday after concerns were raised for the welfare of a man inside the property.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and making threats to kill.

Residents near the scene reported seeing armed police in riot gear, with around 13 cars in attendance.

One 49-year-old resident, who witnessed the incident, said the road was “extremely busy” throughout the afternoon.

The resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “Originally they cordoned off the road and Queens Road.

“There was plain cars as well as the police cars.

“There were more unmarked police cars and police were in full riot gear.

“There was a dog as well but then it got brought away.”

The incident lasted for more than two-and-a-half hours throughout the afternoon.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We continued to negotiate with the man and remained on scene throughout the incident.

“At around 6.30pm a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and making threats to kill.

“He was taken to hospital where he remains.”

The resident stated a man had collapsed outside of the house after the negotiations were complete.

Ambulance vehicles were also present at the scene.

Essex Police have thanked residents in the area who were affected by the stand-off.

The spokesman added: “We would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding throughout the incident.

“The welfare of all those involved, and of those in the immediate area, remained our priority throughout.”

The police received praise for their efforts on social media.
