HATE crime has surged against the East Asian community in Southend during the pandemic, caused by “persecution as a result of ignorance” in the face of coronavirus.

Southend has seen a huge rise through the Covid-19 pandemic - soaring by 75 per cent in a year.

Between March and September this year, 299 hate crimes were recorded by Essex Police in Southend, with 169 of those against members of the East Asian community.

It reveals a staggering 56 per cent of hate crimes were directed in that community - a 75 per cent rise.

The figures come as a shock to Labour Kursaal ward councillor Matt Dent, who says they are being “persecuted as a result of ignorance in the face of this virus”.

Mr Dent said: “I asked the cabinet member for community safety, councillor Martin Terry, as to whether there had been an increase in hate crimes against the East Asian community since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The answer genuinely shocked me.

“In Southend, we have an established East Asian community, who are settled and contribute greatly to the richness of the town.

“The idea that they are being persecuted as a result of ignorance and hatred in the face of this virus horrifies and sickens me. The council needs to do what it can and provide training to its staff and councillors.”

Ron Woodley, deputy leader of Southend Council, said: “There is clearly an underlying problem, around even before the Covid pandemic - there is no way we will tolerate it. I think those responsible should be dealt with by the courts.

“Any hate crime is wrong - no matter who it is. Southend has such a diverse community, and my view is that we are all the same and should be treated the same - if you respect me, I’ll respect you. It’s a shame the minority can’t see through that or the person behind their colour, race, religion, whatever it is.”
