A MORTIFIED mum was left furious after a barber “mutilated” her son’s hair - leaving him with a haircut just like Jim Carrey in the classic 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber.

Carley Dormer, 31, took her nine-year-old son, Mason Thompson, for a pre-lockdown haircut on Tuesday at their regular barbershop, Pitsea Turkish Barbers, in Pitsea.

And despite having visited the barbers for their haircuts ever since it opened two years ago - and the team usually doing a “fantastic job” - the mum-of-one was left shocked when this time round her son was left with a short, wonky bowl cut fringe, reducing him to tears.

Carley, from Basildon, explained: “It was absolutely awful - he looked exactly like Jim Carrey out of Dumb and Dumber. He was a little bit distraught, worrying that kids at school would take the mick out of him.

Annoyed - mum Carley with son Mason

“He ended up crying as the barber just made it worse after we told him twice to try and straighten it out.”

Carley said she “politely” requested her money back for Mason’s £12 haircut and claims the barber yelled at her “not to come back anymore”.

And although she eventually did get her money back after a member of staff intervened, Carley says she, her partner Aaron Russell and her son were then “ushered” out of the shop without an apology.

Luckily, another local barber - Steven Gomma, of Goodycuts - saw a Facebook post Carley shared about the experience - and offered to fix Mason’s hair for free.

The mum added: “His hair looked really odd - like it had had a chunk taken out of it at the front. The guy said he would fix it - but then when he finished it was still really slanted. I said, sorry, I’m really not happy with this, could you make it a bit more even please? The barber huffed and tried to straighten it, but it was just getting worse so I told him to stop.

“I understand they are under a lot of pressure, but we’re paying for a service which hadn’t been done properly.”

Meanwhile, the manager of Pitsea Turkish Barbers, who would give his name only as Ali, said: “I don’t believe there was anything wrong with the haircut. The lady made the child distressed by shouting and being aggressive to my staff.

“The child was happy with it, but his mother was adamant she wanted her money back. We gave her a refund and she is more than welcome back if she chooses to.”
