RUBBISH tips across south Essex are to remain open during the second national lockdown with restrictions in place to allow for social distancing.

In line with national guidance, recycling centres across the area will remain open during over the next month for residents to use.

Barleylands Recycle Centre, Billericay, will still be open, but with strict safety restrictions in place.

David Harrison, Basildon Council's neighbourhoods and public space boss, said: "This is good news for the borough and good news for residents.

“We are pleased to keep Barleylands recycling centre open alongside other recycling centres across Essex.

"This will give our residents the opportunity to dispose of their bulky and recycling waste in a safe manner.

“However it’s very important that restrictions are adhered to for everyone’s safety so please look up the guidance before making a visit.”

The recycling centres run by Southend Council - Stockland Recycling Centre, in Stock Road, Southend, and Leigh Marshes Recycling Centre, in Leigh - will also remain open during the second lockdown.

However, non-essential visits are being discouraged by the council, with strict social distancing measures in place to ensure visitor and staff safety.

Any residents showing symptoms of coronavirus, self-isolating or shielding should not visit.

There are expected to be long traffic queues at times, particularly on Sundays, so residents are encouraged to store waste at home if possible.

New site operating instructions will be in place at the sites, but residents are asked to familiarise themselves with the rules before attending.
