A search for a 'missing' fisherman was launched after a rod and line were found abandoned on a beach.
Southend Coastguard were called in to help police after the equipment was discovered at Western Esplanade yesterday (Sunday, January 24).
The incoming tide had sparked concerns for the welfare of the owner and officers had already conducted a search within 300 metres of where the rod had been found.
The coastguard also carried out its own search but after looking within 500 metres to the east and west of the scene, they were unable to find the owner.
The items left on the beach also revealed no clues as to who the equipment belonged to.
A spokesman for the coastguard said:”The items were removed from scene and handed over to Essex Police.
“Dover CGOC were then briefed and, as there were no personal belongings left on scene and a 500m searched by the water line and promenade yielded no further clues or items, all search parties were then stood down.
“Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you could save someone’s life.”
