Police have sought to reassure the public following reports two men have been trying to snatch dogs in south Essex.
Officers say they have had no direct reports of attempted thefts of dogs.
It comes amid reports on social media that two men have been driving around in a white van on Canvey attempting to steal dogs.
A police spokesman said: “We would like to reassure the community that we have not received any direct reports to date and we have no intelligence at this time to suggest that the safety of your dog is at risk whilst taking exercise.
“If you have any information regarding this activity or wish to report suspicious activity, please call us.”
The spokesman did however ask pet owners to remain cautious and ensure dogs are kept on leads where possible.
If they are not on the lead, it is advised your dog is visible at all times.
The spokesman added: “Just a reminder, during the current pandemic the rules state you can exercise by yourself, the people you live with, with your support bubble, in a childcare bubble or if on your own, you can meet up with one other person from a different household.
“Meeting up in groups to exercise your dog / yourself is not currently permitted.”
