A TRAVELLER camp has set up outside the council building.
At least four caravans and other vehicles were seen parked outside Basildon Council offices, St. Martins Square, yesterday evening.
Council bosses say they and police are working to find a solution and better site for the community.
David Burton, Labour councillor for St Martin's said: "I am aware of the unauthorised encampment on the car park between St Martin’s Church and the council offices.
"This is church owned land and the council are working closely with the police and the church on this matter."
While Labour council leader Gavin Callaghan said he believes this is travellers from a nearby site that were evicted.
He said: "Police have been working all day on this, and they are travellers that were evicted from Hovefields site in Wickford.
"We will be working with them to help find a solution and more suitable and lawful place for them to be."
Lots of residents joined discussion online about the illegal camp outside the council offices.
The borough has long battled the issue of travellers with various dramatic evictions including the infamous Dale Farm in Crays Hill.
