A NATURE reserve has been forced to close after being targeted by vandals for the fourth time in just six months.
Thugs took to the RSPB Bowers Marsh site in Bowers Gifford in the middle of the night, wreaking havoc and causing damage to the metal car park barrier by bending it inwards.
Site bosses say vandalism is now happening on a regular basis, and were forced to close until further notice while contractors fix the damage caused in the latest attack on Tuesday night.
A frequent visitor to the area, who wanted to remain anonymous, says trouble-makers also smashed up wooden fences, dropped rubbish and left behind broken egg shells in the car park.
The 66-year-old from Bowers Gifford, said: “It is so sad to see the destruction, this is the second time I’ve known them have to close.
"I tried to go on Wednesday, and from what I could tell people have smashed the fences, rammed the gate, and even dumped bottles and a petrol can.
“Ideally there needs to be CCTV. It’s such a beautiful and peaceful place for a walk, this just ruins it for people that want to use it.”

RSPB bosses say CCTV equipment isn’t available because there’s currently no electricity or power to the reserve.
The site team have also considered solar-powered options, but believe the siting of these would also be a target for vandalism.
The senior site manager added: “This has happened four times in the last six months, each time it’s mainly damage to our gates. It is an ongoing situation, which is obviously very costly.
“I came down to the site on Wednesday morning, and the police were already there. We’re not sure how long it will be but we can’t re-open until the repairs are done.
“If you do happen to see any anti-social behaviour please report it.”
Slamming vandals, David Harrison - chairman of the neighbourhoods and public spaces committee - added: “This is absolutely criminal.
“It must be taking a lot of money to replace or repair, it is so sad this is happening.”
