COASTGUARD forces were scrambled to reports of a paddle boarder in distress.
Southend Coastguard were called out at 6.50pm yesterday to the Ray near Chalkwell Beach.
A spokesman said: "Once the team had eyes on the paddle boarder the team were happy that they were not in any distress and were paddling quite normally up the Ray in the right direction towards Two Tree Island, so happy no assistance was required.
"Whilst observing the paddle boarder, the team noticed another person who was facing the water approximately 200 metres offshore which was worthy of closer inspection, so the team relocated opposite the Crowstone and sent out crews onto the mudflats to go speak with the person in question and check on their welfare.
"Once contact was made the team established the person was in prayer and well. They informed us they would be out there for another one and a half hours and confirmed would be back before the spring tides rolled back in.
"Our officers reported back that they had no concerns for their welfare and were happy that they knew the tide times and would make shore post completing their prayers.
"Teams were then stood down and returned to station.
"Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999."
