A BUDGET homeware chain is opening a second shop in the borough, after the success of it’s first site.
Home Bargains will launch the new store in the former Mothercare shop at the Mayflower Retail Park in Basildon in July, creating 60 new jobs.
The other store is at the Westgate Shopping Centre in the borough.
Residents and councillors say this is the latest new addition to the booming retail park.
The retail park already has Marks and Spencers, River Island, Greggs, Next, Superdrug and more retailers.
Paul Noakes, 72, chairman of the Noak Bridge Residents Association said: “I am not surprised the chain wants to open another store, the shops are great and it is at the upper end of the budget store market.
“We need to remember there is such a market for these sort of stores.
“The Mayflower Retail Park has just gone from strength to strength - it’s a struggle to even get a parking space some times.
“It’s definitely a good idea and it’s good to see that big empty store will not be left for too long.
“I think it will be an advantage and is worthwhile and a very good decision.”
Kerry Smith, Independent deputy leader of Basildon Council said the range of stores and convenient parking draws in customers to the retail park.
He said: “This shows the success of the shopping destination and it’s very popular with people from Billericay in particular.
“It’s a car friendly environment as it’s easy to park up and so convenient and that’s why it’s so successful.
“With all the shops there’s something for everyone there too. It’s good to see the business is doing so great and the new jobs will be good for young people.”
The council boss fears shoppers are put off the Westgate Shopping Centre due to parking problems at the site.
The chain has more than 500 stores across the UK and offers a range of products including homeware, garden items and family toys and games.
A spokesperson from Home Bargains said: “Due to the success of our store in Westgate Shopping Centre, our second Basildon store is due to open in July 2021 at Mayflower Retail Park, creating upwards of 60 new jobs for the community.
“As such, we are currently recruiting for store supervisors, store assistants and store cleaners, and would encourage those interested to head to our careers website.”
