URINE lined the streets while broken bottles were left scattered across Old Leigh following yet another night of chaos for the town.

Leigh councillor Carole Mulroney is now calling for a dispersal order to be put in place every weekend throughout the summer, covering the town from Friday to Sunday along with bank holiday Mondays.

It’s hoped the move will deter the repeated onslaught suffered by the community with Leigh having been plagued with gang fights, drug dealing and drunken youths causing mayhem.

It comes after yet another dispersal zone was imposed in Leigh Old Town following anti-social behaviour and people refusing to leave the area.

The order was put in place to prevent crime and disorder and prevent residents being harassed, alarmed or distressed.

It ran from 9.18pm Saturday until 9.18pm Sunday.

Ron Sverdloff, who lives in the town, said: “It was absolutely manic down there. So many people were drinking for so long, and the streets were running with urine.

“We ended up having to hose it down and there were also broken bottles on the beach and footpath.

“You notice 90 per cent of it is imported booze. You’d fill a small lorry with all the stuff you end up clearing up.”

Mr Sverdloff, 78, is adamant an alcohol-free zone is the only way to solve the issue with CCTV and community safety officers among measures already in place.

Peter Wexham, councillor for Leigh, said residents feel under “siege” with the continuous unrest right by their homes.

He continued: “Sadly this is becoming a regular thing, they are turning up in their hundreds and causing chaos.

“People are bringing their own drink with them and it just erupts into trouble, it’s ruining the reputation of Old Leigh.

“It’s putting fishermen off working down there and residents feel they can’t go out their front doors where there are so many packed into the area outside. They feel they’re under attack.”

The latest dispersal order covered the area bounded by Old Leigh High Street and seawall, Belton Bridge to dead end of Leigh High Street past Bell Wharf up to St Clements Church West to end of Leigh Park Road.

Just weeks ago, teenager Luke Bellfield died from stab wounds following an incident in Leigh Old Town.

It's also been suggested a pubwatch scheme allowing landlords to communicate effectively to help deter troublesome customers should be put in place.
