Trees have fallen onto cars and across roads after high winds have been battering the south of the county.

Images show a tree laying across a car at the junction of Neil Armstrong Way and Young Close in Southend.

Burges Road in Thorpe Bay is also blocked by a fallen tree and witnesses say police are on scene and have closed the road.

It comes after the Met Office is warning the county, as well as the east of England, is set to be battered by strong winds throughout the day.

The yellow weather warning will remain in place until about 9pm on Friday evening.

It is expecting the winds will cause travel disruption as well as potentially damaging some outside structures.

Here is what the Met Office is saying to expect:

Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely

Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely

Some damage to outdoor temporary structures possible, with some tree branches down too.

Carole Mulroney, cabinet member for environment, culture, tourism and planning, said: “With extremely high winds across the Borough today, sadly we have been made aware of a small number of trees falling. Our arboriculture team respond quickly to any such reports to ensure that our contractor, Tree Fella, is on site quickly to remove any fallen trees and ensure safety of residents and motorists. If necessary traffic, management will be organised.

“Any trees that fall due to the wind are recorded and a replacement will be planted in the Borough. I would urge motorists to avoid the area if possible, and also residents to ensure they remain cautious whilst travelling today.”
