PATRIOTIC MP Sir David Amess wants the UK to quit Eurovision after finishing rock bottom, insisting the event is “designed to humiliate us”.
After James Newman secured zero points on Saturday, Sir David boldly called for the UK to stop competing.
He has even lodged a Commons Early Day Motion urging the BBC to “no longer spend licence fee money on an event designed to humiliate the UK”.
He further suggested “if the winning song is to be broadcast on the public airwaves, it should be preceded by a public health warning”.
Sir David, Tory MP for Southend West, said: “I’ve been a fan of Eurovision for a long time, and many years ago I was able to congratulate Sandy Shaw on her victory.
“Gradually however the contest has deteriorated, with more and more countries who are not even in Europe entering the contest.
“It no longer seems to be a singing contest, but a dance and theatrical contest.
“Over the last decade the voting has become highly political. Our entry this year may not have been the best, but it wasn’t the worst, and yet we got no marks.
“I’d like to see the public decide whether we should continue in the contest. If they do, they should chose the song, and if they don’t, perhaps we could have a Commonwealth contest.”

On Saturday, the UK was the only nation to receive zero points.
Claire Turner, who owns Salon Tinted in Westcliff, has rejected the call after heading backstage at this year’s Eurovision in what was the “highlight of her career”.
Claire, 42, helped style dancers, singers and performers in the contest.
She said: “As someone who has been to the event - somewhere where every country is celebrated in Europe not just the European Union - it’s incredible to be there.
“You get to mix and talk to people from different cultures, and I got to work with people I would’ve never met.
“It was such an honour, and in my view it doesn’t matter whether we get no points or 12 points.
“This is an institution which brings people together in the most difficult of times, it would be terrible for us to pull out.”
