A man who drove over three times the speed limit on a jet ski in Benfleet Creek has been successfully prosecuted.

Peter Slater, of Essex Close in Canvey, was spotted speeding by a member of the Essex Marine Police Unit last summer - travelling at around 25 knots.

This was over three times the speed limit, which stands at eight knots to protect both river users and the environment.

Slater, who pleaded guilty to the charges at Westminster Magistrates Court on May 20, said: "If I had known you could get in this kind of trouble, I would never have done it."

Benfleet Creek is an environmentally protected area for it's habitats and vegetation.

However, wash generated by the jet ski was found to have the potential to harm the environment, the court was told.

Mr Slater was fined £600 and ordered to pay a total of £1,660, after being prosecuted by the Port of London Authority.

After the hearing, chief harbour master Bob Baker said: "We think this prosecution will serve as a warning to river users.

"If you break the rules, we will take action.

"We are also very grateful to the Essex Marine Police Unit. Their help is vital in prosecuting those who jeopardise safety and the environment on the river."
