A FIRE has broken out in a building in Southend.
Fire crews are at the scene of the blaze in a building on Roots Hall Avenue, Southend, near Roots Hall Stadium.
Pictures from the scene show thick black smoke coming from the building, and fire engines in attendance.
It is not yet known which building is on fire, but at least four fire engines are in attendance.
Residents reported seeing the smoke in the air from miles away.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the fire happened at a commerical premises near Victoria Avenue and it began at 5.45pm.
A spokesman said: "Firefighters have been called to reports of a fire at a premises in Victoria Avenue, Southend this evening.
"Please avoid the area. If you live nearby, keep windows and doors closed."
Further pictures from the scene appear to show a mountain of waste on fire at the site.
Echo sports reporter Chris Phillips said the fire is centred on the corner of the car park near the South Stand of Roots Hall.
