POLICE launched additional stop and search powers on Southend seafront and the town centre following a series of incidents including robberies from people entering the town.
Officers say it is believed a group of people who have come into Southend from outside the borough are linked to the incidents and have assured they have taken action to keep the public safe.
Officers have been authorised to use stop and search powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

This is an extension of the stop and search powers officers already have, but differs because it means they do not need to have reasonable grounds to carry a stop and search out.
Police were authorised to use these powers between 11.15pm last night until 5.15am today.
The area in which the Section 60 authorisation was in place included Marine Parade and the High Street.
Inspector Tony Adams said: “We are utilising the extension to the stop and search powers we already have in order to keep you safe.
“We will not tolerate people coming to Southend intent on committing crime these extended powers are just one of the tools we have available to protect the public.
“If you are in Southend overnight you will see an increased police presence but please do not be alarmed.
“I want to thank the public in advance for their understanding and co-operation.”
