QUIETER planes for night flights at Southend Airport are not enough to end residents’ misery and there should be “no more” taking off, an MP has told the Commons.

Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, has urged bosses to bring an end to the Amazon cargo flights, which take off and land overnight.

Night flights have consistently been blamed for causing sleepless nights for residents living under the flight path.

He spoke just days after the Echo revealed talks are ongoing between Southend Airport and Amazon to use quieter planes for the night flights.

The discussions are currently “live” between the two firms, chief executive Glyn Jones said.

Sir David said: “I continue to receive complaints from residents whose lives are being made a misery by the night flights from Southend Airport.

“The majority of people do not have an objection to flights during the day, and many will welcome the recent announcement regarding international travel, but it is simply not acceptable that people are being woken up multiple times during the night by these cargo flights.

“I am sure that the use of quieter planes would be welcomed but what the majority of residents who live directly under the flight path are looking for is a complete end to the night flights which are having such an impact on their physical and mental health.

In the Commons, Sir David raised the issue of night flights at Southend Airport with the Secretary of State for Transport Southend Airport has permission for 120 night flights per month, but insists the number of flights is regularly much lower.

They run from 11pm and 6.30am.

A spokesman for Southend Airport, said: “We can assure Sir David that London Southend Airport operates night flights within what is permitted by its existing Section 106 agreement. The airport has also launched its Connecting Communities Commitment and outlined plans for a noise forum to listen to community concerns and work together to find sustainable solutions to reduce the impact while protecting hundreds of jobs our logistics operation has created.”
