A FED-UP homeowner claims the noise coming from a kebab shop extractor fan is so loud he can feel vibrations in his floorboards which is causing him “extreme suffering”.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, alleges the fan system at the back of Best Kebab, in West Street, Westcliff, is giving him headaches - and it runs seven days a week.
The resident, who has autism and suffers from several medical disabilities, says the noise from the fan first became unbearable about five months ago.
“It goes from 11am to almost 1am the following morning, seven days a week.
“The noise just doesn’t stop,” he claims.
“I work from home and it’s constantly grinding me down.
“I can’t have my doors and windows open when I’m working from home because the noise is so interfering.”
He added: “It has an impact on my physical health because I need fresh air as I have heart conditions.
“But now, having my doors and windows open only makes things worse, and the impact on my mental health is becoming extremely bad as I am suffering from headaches constantly.”
The resident, who has lived there for two years, says he is considering moving homes as a last resort and claims neighbours have joined him in calling for the council to step in.
A spokesperson for Best Kebab claimed the fan had been fixed a month ago.
“We had some issues a while ago with our fan out the back,” they said.
“A lady and a gentleman who lived nearby came around and we showed them the back of the shop and what was happening.
“We have now fixed the issue and if anyone still has a problem with the noise they can come into the shop and talk with us about it.”
Southend Council confirmed an investigation into the kebab shop had been launched following noise complaints.
Cllr Martin Terry, cabinet member for public protection, said: “We take the concerns of residents very seriously and our environmental health officers are aware of the case.
“As it is an ongoing investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
