A FORMER police officer who was accused of "kissing a woman repeatedly" and sexual touching has been acquitted.

Jonathan McLeod, 38, from Leigh, served with Essex Police as an inspector in Basildon before resigning last year.

Mr McLeod had previously denied four counts of sexual assault on a female over the age of 16 between 2016 and 2018.

This included allegations of "kissing repeatedly" and sexual touching without consent at Basildon Police Station and in the car park of Tesco Mayflower store.

He was set to stand trial at Ipswich Crown Court this month.

However, at an earlier hearing, the Crown Prosecution Service informed the court that it would be offering no evidence in relation to all counts against him.

Mr McLeod was then formally found not guilty on all charges.

He had previously resigned from the force in March 2020.
