A SURGE in reports of prostitution and drug dealing - sometimes in the middle of the day - has prompted a new police operation to help vulnerable sex workers subjected to “modern day slavery”.

Every day, charities and police have up to 16 reports of prostitution and drug dealing in Ambleside Drive and Honiton Road, Southchurch.

The Echo understands the women being picked up are from Southend, while the drivers are coming from further afield.

Essex Police is reporting a spike in incidents in recent months, and has launched a new operation, codenamed Vimto.

Rob McAvoy, founder of charity HopeBox Southchurch, said: “It is happening during the day, but not all the time.

“It’s been an issue for a while, but there has been an increase recently.

“Us and the police are trying to make contact with the women as part of the operation.

“It’s difficult to put your finger on what’s causing the issues, but the pandemic won’t have helped.”

The new operation will see an increased police presence on the two roads, with officers speaking to the women involved, and those “controlling them.”

Upgraded CCTV is in the process of being introduced on Ambleside Drive, Southend, but has been delayed due to supply issues.

The new cameras will be able to provide better quality images.

Martin Terry, Southend Independent councillor in charge of community safety, said: “This is a huge concern.

“The women are being exploited, and modern day slavery is involved too.

“Part of it is to do with poverty and substance abuse.

“We’re just trying to help those involved, and the police are dealing with those who are picking the women up and dealing the drugs.”

A spokesman for Essex Police, added: “We have recently received an increase in reports of antisocial behaviour, drug use and street prostitution in the area of Ambleside Drive.

“As a result we have launched Operation Vimto.

“This aims to engage with women who sell sex, support them out of this lifestyle, develop intelligence and target people using and controlling these vulnerable people.”
