Protesters are blocking a busy junction causing delays for commuters.

The campaigners are sitting in the road at large junction for the M25 near Lakeside Shopping Centre.

Police say 12 people have been arrested after the incident and force bosses have thanked drivers for their patience and the road is re-opened.

Images show traffic is being held and campaigners have banners with "insulate Britain" written on them.

A website for the protest group says it's working to lower emossions and working for change.

It states: "Join the Insulate Britain Campaign to force the government to make significant legislative change to start lowering emissions."

There are reports of "violent clashes" between climate protesters and drivers near junction 20 of the M25. Police have been contacted for confirmation.

 

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "Eleven people have been arrested after the M25 was blocked. We received a call shortly before 8.15am today reporting a number of people were blocking the road.

"Officers attended and worked to resolve the situation quickly and safely and this included shutting the road.

"Eleven people were subsequently arrested on suspicion of highways obstruction and they are currently in custody."

Chief Inspector Paul Austin said: “This incident caused significant disruption and our officers worked to resolve it as quickly and safely as possible. I want to thank the drivers affected for their patience and understanding.”
