ICONIC RAF aircraft flew in to visit Southend after a flypast of Westminster Abbey.

Yesterday, (September 19), the crew at Southend Airport were treated to a visit from the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, with the aircraft flying in Battle formation.

The Spitfire and Hurricane popped in for fuel following their flypast of Westminster Abbey as part of the annual thanksgiving service.

Both single-seat fighter aircraft proved integral in the Battle of Britain, with the Spitfire used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after the Second World War.

While The Hawker Hurricane was designed in the early 1930's, and was the first monoplane fighter to enter service with the RAF.

A spokesman from Southend Airport air traffic control, said: "Always a pleasure to see such iconic aircraft on the apron!"
