A MURDER probe has been launched following the death of a man who was attacked in Westcliff.

Essex Police were called to reports of an injured man, who is thought to have been attacked in Hainault Avenue, shortly before 10.35pm on Saturday.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he later died.

The road was closed overnight with a police cordon put in place before re-opening late on Sunday afternoon.

Two men – a 24 year-old from Witham and a 27 year-old from Westcliff – have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody when the Echo went to print last night.

Detective Superintendent Stephen Jennings, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation, but we are already putting together a picture of what happened and the circumstances which led up to the victim’s death.

“This incident took place in a residential area so I know it’s likely to cause concern for those living nearby but we have made quick arrests and do not believe there is a risk to the wider public.

“Our enquiries will carry [on] in the area so you will see an increased police presence there.

“I need anyone who saw or heard anything or has CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage to contact my team.”

Martin Terry, councillor for public protection, was saddened at the news - and insisted there is no place for violence in the town.

Mr Terry, said: “It is devastating to hear, this type of crime is completely unacceptable in our community.

“I’d like to share my condolences with the gentleman’s family and assure everyone police will do all they can to clamp down on such violent crime.

“Understandably it makes people feel nervous, we don’t to see anything like this anywhere - but especially not in Southend.

“We have had a 70 per cent reduction in overall crime and a drop in violent crime, but sadly, we still get isolated incidents.

“My thoughts are with those affected.”
