SIR David Amess MP was "doing what he does best" before he was stabbed to death inside a Leigh church.
A man has been arrested, Essex Police confirmed.
Speaking before Sir David's death was confirmed this afternoon, James Courtenay, Tory councillor for Chalkwell, heaped praise on the MP, who was holding a constituent surgery at the time.

He said: "Dreadful news. So sad. My thoughts and best wishes are with Sir David and his family today.
"David was, as he often does, doing what he does best.
"Out in his constituency meeting residents to hear their problems and help them."
Ian Gilbert, leader of Southend Council, added: "I am profoundly shocked by the news coming through about Sir David Amess.
"My thoughts are with him and his family."
