SOUTHEND’s first ever Halloween parade has been heralded a success by organisers – but do our readers want it to become an annual event?
On Saturday evening, thousands flocked to the seafront to witness a colourful procession, street theatre drummers, dancing, all capped off with spectacular fireworks display hosted by Southend BID.
The parade, which featured more than 700 participants, was organised by Southend Community Events in collaboration with Southend Council and Southend Tourism Partnership.
“Last night's inaugural Halloween parade along the seafront was a massive success, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. It showed off the spirit and creativity which will make Southend such a fantastic city,” said Cllr Matt Dent.
“I hope that the parade will become a new regular feature in Southend's events calendar.”
But do Echo readers agree with the councillor?
We asked the question on Facebook and out of more than 100 comments, most were overwhelmingly positive and in favour of seeing the event return every year.
“Definitely it was a much needed uplift for everyone after all that we have been through. It definitely has to include LED Silent Disco Hire they were amazing,” Kate Cairns-Gill said.
“Absolutely it was amazing, such a good atmosphere,” added Tina Elizabeth Turner while Leah Morton said: “Yes it would be nice and u can make fun memories with family.”
However, some residents lamented the loss of the August carnival along the seafront.
The carnival procession was cancelled for the second year running due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown earlier this year had suggested large events would be possible from June, but carnival organisers backed out amid uncertainty it could go ahead.
“Possibly, but first vote would be for the return of the Summer one,” Faye Milne said.
RJ Beatz said: “No but bring back the carnival”
