A NINE-year-old girl whose dad died from a brain tumour has raised more than £1,000 for charity by “doing odd jobs around the house” in his memory.

Emily Abel’s dad, Dan, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2012 after a Specsavers optician noticed swelling on both his optic nerves.

He was just 39-years-old.

The father-of-three, from Rayleigh, underwent three brain surgeries, radiotherapy and chemotherapy but died four years later.

Ahead of the anniversary of Dan’s death on Wednesday, and in recognition of International Brain Tumour Awareness Week, the youngster asked her mum if she could give her “some things to do” in exchange for money for Brain Tumour Research.

So far, the list her mum, Katherine, 41, came up with has included taking out the recycling, emptying the rubbish out of the car, tidying up her bedroom, making her brothers’ beds, vacuuming the hallway and cleaning the bathroom sink.

Katherine, who hosted a black tie ball last year which raised more than £10,000 for the charity, said: “This was all her idea – she said she wanted to raise some money for Brain Tumour Research and asked me to come up with a list of jobs.

“It’s uncanny because she’s the messiest one in the family but she likes cleaning.”

The genealogist, who established genealogy business Abel Associates with Dan, added: “I wrote a post about her on social media during International Brain Tumour Awareness Week and people started giving her money at school and telling her to put it in her pot so I thought I’d better set up a proper fundraising page and the money has just kept coming, so she’s absolutely thrilled with it.”

Emily, a pupil at Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Primary School, was asked to speak about her fundraiser at school and has seen her achievements recognised in a newsletter that went out to parents last week.

She has already raised more than £1,150.
