RADICAL plans for a £300,000 revamp of Pitsea with light-up pavements and art murals are being drawn up.
Basildon Council’s Leisure and Environment Committee is considering proposals for the town centre from the train station through to the thriving market, Aldi and The Range.
Craig Rimmer, ward councillor and committee chairman, is pushing for a new identity for the town.
He said: “We have £100,000 and are trying to get others on board such as the county council and developers. We want people to have a better sense of pride in the area.
“We want to see games such as giant chess, art murals, more light to help make it safer too. We want to direct people from the station when they arrive.
“Plans include a logo for the town involving a duck to help with a new identity.
“I think we could see blue light-up pavements which will be fun for children and big kids too. We want to make dead space creative and it is so needed in the town.
“Residents need to respect the town and make it a nicer place.”
To stop new visitors getting lost, the “gateway” could include multi-coloured lights, pointing them “in the right direction.”
The lights would be built into the floor. The plan would include increased CCTV.
The Echo understands the council is looking for “partners” for the plan.
This would allow more than £100,000 to be spent.
Craig Lawreniuk, 39, manager of Pitsea Market welcomed the proposed improvements for the town centre.
He said: “I think this all sounds great and a link from the station to the market is a good idea.
“I think any regeneration for the town is fantastic but we do need some buildings redeveloped too.
“It’s good for the people of Pitsea and will be good to draw more people into the market area. It’s been going from strength to strength.”
Basildon Council’s Leisure and Environment Committee will consider its plans and tell officers to investigate further on Wednesday.
