VOLUNTEER Covid marshals are urgently needed to help run the Canvey vaccination booster program in a ‘race against time’ to get all adults protected.

Marshals are needed to assist at vaccine centres to help keep residents they attend for their Covid-19 booster shots.

The role will see volunteers oversee safety of attendees queuing for their shots.

The vaccine programme has been pushed into overdrive after the Prime Minister announced plans to get all adults a third shot by the New Year.

Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services (CAVS) has shared an appeal for “urgently needed” Covid marshals to assist in those efforts.

“If anyone has been considering volunteering then this is a really important support role that is going to help the system to help the residents keep safe,” Janice Gibson, Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services organiser, said.

“We just ask for a little of your time if you can spare it, it would be very much appreciated, as help is urgently needed.”

CAVS has been working to connect volunteers with different organisations and programs of work throughout the pandemic.

The latest appeal has seen many residents step forward to help, but more volunteers are needed.

“From a local resident’s perspective, the call to action is being well received and we are grateful for the people that are interested in helping,” Ms Gibson said.

As part of the biggest and fastest vaccine programme in health service history, online bookings are available for everyone aged 18 and over.

Walk-in clinics are operating across south Essex with sites in Basildon, Benfleet, Canvey, Leigh, Rayleigh, Rochford, and Southend among others.

Rachel Hearn, executive director for nursing and quality for Mid and South Essex Health and Care Partnership, said: “We know we are in a race against time to step up our Covid vaccine programme and are working with colleagues across our partnership to create the capacity to deliver the booster programme.

“I would urge people to be patient, as we increase availability and to use the information locally on the Essex Covid Vaccine website and via the NHS national booking site to get your jab and protect yourselves and your families.”
