A WOMAN is worried overflowing bins she reported almost two months ago will attract rats and other animals if left unattended any longer.

The Canvey resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she regularly visits Southend to go shopping, eat at restaurants and meet with friends.

When in the town centre for Bonfire Night on November 5, she spotted a large pile of rubbish overflowing from a bin on Nelson Mews, near the Railway Hotel.

“I took a photo and sent it through to the council and it appears nothing has been done about it and the bins are overflowing,” she explained, having discovered the same rubbish pile was still there when doing some shopping on Monday, January 3.

“I understand the Railway Hotel is not being used at the moment, so I don’t know where all the rubbish is accumulating from.”

She added: “We visit quite regularly and its noticeable around that area that is pretty poorly looked after. That whole area, even along the railway track, is just so messy.

The concerned visitor says she was disappointed with the state of the area, and worries that the overflowing litter, which she says appeared to have been strewn along the road, will attract rats and foxes from the nearby railway tracks.

“Obviously there are rats and other animals around the area from the railway track, so it’s a pretty poor state of affairs to be honest,” she said.

“The red bin is filled and there is rubbish scattered everywhere around the Railway Hotel.

“The whole of Southend was a bit of a state when we were out yesterday, but we did see litter pickers out working on it, just not that spot I had reported.

She added: “I’m just disappointed, as it used to be such a lovely part of town. It feels like an area that has been forgotten and I feel sorry for the businesses and residents.”

A council spokesperson said: “We always encourage residents to report uncollected rubbish via MySouthend and would like to thank this resident for doing just that. We will alert the relevant teams and resolve any issues that might be outstanding.”
