A DACHSHUND has been given a second chance at life after being saved from the grizzly dog meat trade.
Biscuit the dachshund had been used as a breeding dog in China, but after growing old, was facing slaughter as part of China’s dog meat trade.
That’s when UK charity DMT Dachshund Rescue and Support Group stepped in, saving the poor pooch and finding her a new home in Hadleigh.
Sally Maclean, herself a trustee of the charity, welcomed Biscuit to her home with loving arms in April of 2020.
Biscuit was the 57-year-old’s first dog as an adult, having had dachshunds as a child.

“There are thousands of dogs every year that end being killed, but she beat the odds and was rescued,” Sally said.
“She has lived with me now for nine months and she is a totally different dog to when she arrived.
“While a happy dog, she is still timid and nervous of people, flinches at loud noises and is unsure of dogs she doesn’t know. I can’t imagine the horrors she witnessed and the horrific life she led but now she’s safe, loved and living the best life.”
Sally has since adopted a second dachshund, Florence, as she felt Biscuit was lonely when she first arrived in the country, having lived her life surround by other dogs.
Happy - Biscuit
And the Hadleigh resident, who now volunteers with the charity that introduced her to Biscuit, is determined to see more dogs saved.
Consuming dog meat is legal in China, except for the city of Shenzhen, however, in 2020, the commercial slaughter of dogs was banned across the country.
“We are a team of 10 women,” Sally explained. “We run it ourselves, raise the funds, run publicity and we are getting bigger and bigger and rescuing as man dogs as we can.
“We are currently up to over 6,000 members on Facebook and so far we have brought 27 dachshunds across from China and South Korea into homes in the UK and we have got another 35 out there at the moment that we are trying to home.”
