FLOODING is imminent on coastal roads and footpaths from Shoebury to Leigh, residents have been warned.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert warning of minor flooding between 2:45pm and 4:45pm today.

Strong winds and spring tides may cause large waves, and spray overtopping on the coast.

The areas said to be most at risk are Southend frontage, and roads around Southchurch Park and Thorpe Hall Golf Club, Shoebury Common and Cambridge Town.

The Thames Barrier, which helps protect Londonfrom flooding, is being closed from 12.45pm – 8.45pm in response to an expected tidal surge from Storm Franklin.

It is only the 206th time the barrier has been closed since it was first used in 1983.

The Thames Barrier is the second largest flood defence barrier in the world, built over a 520m wide stretch of the Thames near Woolwich in south London.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “Flood water is dangerous. Don't put yourself or others at risk. We are monitoring the situation and are not expecting the situation to escalate.”

A Southend Coastguard spokesman added: “Stay back, stay safe and don’t take any unnecessary risks in or on the water which may endanger yourselves, your family and put rescuers at risk that are called out

“Should you see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, don’t hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you could save someone’s life!”
