A FAMILY faces a “torturous” year-long wait for answers after burying a beloved father who plunged to his death from a hospital window.
Aaron Deeley, 43, died after falling from a third-floor window at Southend Hospital in the early hours of January 14, having been admitted days earlier following an attempted overdose.
On Friday (March 4), his grieving family laid his body to rest at a funeral service at Southend Crematorium.
Now, the family faces having to wait a year for a full coroner’s inquest, after it was referred to Colchester’s complex inquests team.
“We can’t believe he is gone and that he didn’t get the help that he needed,” Michelle, Aaron’s wife of 12 years, said.
“My anger shifts every day, from being angry at him for trying to commit suicide, then back to the hospital for failing him.”
She added: “Having to wait for answers from the inquest is complete and utter torture.”
The Canvey father-of-four leaves behind four kids Hunter, 20, Alexis, 14, Destiny, 11, and Jason, 10.
The family claim Aaron, who was suffering from depression, was left unsupervised when he died, despite assurances from the hospital he would be under 24-hour supervision.
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, is conducting an investigation into his death.
Michelle says the funeral, which was well attended by family, friends and loved ones, has helped her “draw a line in the sand” and move forward for the sake of her kids.
“In a way, I am pleased the funeral is out of the way because time really dragged on waiting to say goodbye to him,” she said.
“It all seemed so surreal when we first go to the crematorium. The whole day was a blur. To see his coffin in the hearse… I did not want to let go of him.
“We are absolutely devastated. Not in a million years did we think this day would ever come.
Michelle added: “He’s at peace, which is lovely to know, but we are not and never will be, because we lost our whole world and now we are trying to survive without him.”
