A PENSIONER’S car was written off after a dramatic crash saw a car flip onto its roof, collide with other vehicles and street signs on a quiet Leigh road.

Brian Garner, of Adalia Crescent, was left fearing someone could be seriously injured in the crash close to his home.

After hearing a “very loud noise” he rushed outside to find a scene of chaos.

A driver had crashed into his car, dragging it across the road and through two fence panels before hitting a Mercedes.

The 81-year-old, who has lived on the road for 24 years, said: “I was astounded to see a car on its roof opposite my property. Bearing in mind I live down a very quiet street, this was a huge shock.

Echo:

Mr Garner's damaged car

“A driver had smashed into my car and dragged it across the road and then knocked down two fences down, flattened a street sign, before crashing into a neighbour’s brand-new Mercedes.

“It was carnage, my car is completely written off. It’s all aggravation, phone calls to insurance, hire cars, the garage, we don’t need this right now, but that’s life.”

The incident was captured by neighbours on CCTV but Mr Garner raised concerns it could have been much worse if any pedestrians were passing.

He added: “Within minutes, there were multiple police cars, ambulances and fire engines, and the woman, who looked like she may have been almost 80, had to be cut out of her vehicle.

“If anyone was walking close by to where the incident happened, severe or even fatal injury could have occurred due to the sheer speed and lack of control.

“It’s common to see kids playing and people walking their dogs around my area, so it was extremely lucky that no one was injured.”

An Essex Police spokesman said: “We were called to a two-vehicle collision in Adalia Crescent, Leigh, shortly before 9am on March 3.

“We arrived and closed the road while emergency services colleagues worked at the scene.

“The road was re-opened shortly before 1pm.

“The driver of one vehicle was taken to hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not life-changing or life-threatening.

“No arrests have been made and our enquiries are ongoing.”
