AT least 40 new jobs will be created when a fast food restaurant opens its doors in Billericay High Street next month. 

KFC has confirmed that it will open on the site of a former betting shop at some point during April, but was unable to con firm exactly when the restaurant would open. 

The fast food restaurant will open at 126 High Street, in place of a former Coral betting shop.

There had been a number of concerns over the plans, including fears over noise, smell, litter, and anti-social behaviour.

Nevertheless, plans were approved by Basildon Council after KFC responded to concerns, which included a “Good Neighbour Guide” in their planning application.

Councillor Andrew Schrader, who originally voted against the application due to traffic concerns, welcomed the news.

He said: “So I voted against the application at committee because I had concerns around the people coming to pick up the food creating traffic, in simple terms.

“But the permission having been granted and the business coming to the town, obviously I still welcome anyone who wants to invest in Billericay High Street.

“The business is now here, and importantly it is going to create new jobs, and so I think it is another vote of confidence in the viability of Billericay High Street.

“I wish them well as the permission did include litter picking, which KFC provide regularly, so we don’t see the high street cluttered up, and KFC do also have a good cooperate reputation so I hope it will be a welcome addition.”

The popular fast-food chain will be open from 11am to 11pm seven days a week and is set to bring in up to 40 new jobs, with a mix of both full-time and part-time roles.

Plans were approved in November and construction is nearing completion ahead of opening next month. 

A KFC spokesperson  said: “The rumours are true; The Colonel is coming to town in April.

“We know we’ve got lots of KFC fans in Billericay – and we love the area too.

“We’re busy getting our chicks in a row but we can’t wait to settle in bringing buckets of fried chicken and 40 new jobs.”

The nearest KFC to Billericay is around about six and a half miles away in Mayflower Basildon, with another in Laindon.
