A MUM claims her doctor told her to take her daughter and find somewhere else to temporarily live due to exposed asbestos in her home.

Georgia Gavin, 25, claims property services company Morgan Sindall, used by Basildon Council, exposed black paint containing asbestos while carrying out renewal works on the flooring of her council-owned flat on King Edward Road.

Following the asbestos being exposed on March 2, Ms Gavin said it took the council over a week to acknowledge the problem.

However the council says the delays were caused as she refused to let the contractors enter her home.

The stress of the experience has been difficult for Ms Gavin to deal.

Her GP told her to find other accomodation for her and her daughter, Ava, while asbestos is still exposed.

She said: “We are nowhere. Whenever I speak to Basildon Council or Morgan Sindall I’m told they’re dealing with it and someone will give a call back. I’m also told I’m not allowed to book the appointment in and there’s no fixed date as to when they’re going to come back.

“Me and my daughter are still breathing in all this asbestos and they haven’t even bothered to seal it while they’re waiting to book the repair in. This home was a golden ticket and now it’s my biggest nightmare.”

She added: “They’re not taking it seriously at all. I’m told its low-risk asbestos so I don’t need to be put in temporary accommodation. At the same time they won’t let their workers in. I’m in such a catch 22.”

In response to the complaints a spokesman for the council said they undertook tests, which Ms Gavin say were not taken correctly, showing the levels of asbestos were not dangerous to either resident.

However they also confirmed repairs on the property would take place soon.

A spokesman said: “Ms Gavin was first contacted on 3 March within 24 hours of reporting the issue. Subsequently, Ms Gavin refused council contractors entry to her property on several occasions which resulted in some delays.”

“A report confirmed air flow as satisfactory with copies provided to Miss Gavin, however there were delays to planned works due to refusal of access to the property on several occasions.

“Both the council and Morgan Sindall met with Miss Gavin on March 24 to find a resolution to the situation in which Miss Gavin requested for alternate engineers to carry out the works.”

They added: Works are scheduled for Monday and will be overseen by a Morgan Sindall supervisor.”
