BARGAIN train tickets from as little as £3 from Southend to London are set to be launched to tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

Ticket prices are set to be slashed as the Government looks to introduce cheaper travel in April and May.

In what is being dubbed the Great British Rail Sale, the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said more than one million train tickets would be reduced this spring to help hard-pressed households, facing rising bills and soaring inflation.

Operator Greater Anglia is one of those slashing prices for trains between April 25 until May 27 with 90,000 discounted rail tickets.

Selected journeys between Southend Victoria and London Liverpool Street will be as low as £3.

According to website Trainline, some journeys can currently cost up to £13.80. Martin Moran, Greater Anglia’s commercial, customer services and train presentation director, said: “Customers travelling across East Anglia can now save up to 50 per cent on advance tickets. There is only a limited number and when they’re gone, they’re gone.

“The Great British Rail Sale is a great opportunity for people to explore all East Anglia has to offer there is so much to see and do. Take a trip to London to soak up the sights, visit one of the many wonderful coastal destinations or explore a new town or city.

“There are even more savings to be had with a railcard. Railcard customers will be able to save an additional 1/3 off a discounted ticket providing the railcard discount is eligible on the chosen journey.”

Elsewhere c2c also announced a slate of discounts for their services which are available to buy from April 19 until May 2.

These include fares from London Fenchurch Street to Southend Central costing £10.00, Barking to Leigh at £7.70, Basildon to West Ham from £6.90 and Benfleet to London Fenchurch Street at £9.50.

Rob Taylor, c2c’s interim managing director said: “During the Great British Rail sale, c2c will be even better value for customers looking to make off-peak trips across our network.

“With seaside attractions at the City of Southend to the many varied cultural hotspots in London, travelling on c2c this Spring is the best way to travel.”
