A SOUTH Essex MP says he is “deeply unhappy” with the Prime Minister after revealing his own mother died during a Covid lockdown.
MPs will vote later today on whether to launch an inquiry into Boris Johnson amid claims he misled Parliament over the so-called partygate scandal.
Mr Johnson had told Parliament last year no rules were broken inside Number 10 during lockdowns.
However, he was one of a number of people to have received fines by police last week for breaching lockdown rules by attending a gathering at Downing Street.
Billericay and Basildon MP John Baron says he has expressed his dismay to the Prime Minister over rule-breaking inside Number 10.
However, he stopped short of accusing Mr Johnson of misleading MPs.
Speaking in the Commons today, Mr Baron said: “I have made my disquiet known to the Prime Minister a couple of times now, and he has taken that on board.
“I am deeply unhappy at the way Number 10 has performed over this period in question, but what I would suggest to the right honourable member is that its perfectly natural in this country that you weigh all the evidence before deciding on intent, because the central issue here is whether the Prime Minister misled Parliament.
“Would he agree that, in us all accepting that it should be referred to the privileges committee, that committee needs to weigh all evidence before coming to a decision – and that includes the Sue Gray report.”
Ahead of today’s vote, Labour leader Sir Keir claimed there was already a ‘reasonable case’ the Prime Minister had lied to Parliament.
He said: “There is already a case before the House that’s very clear. The Prime Minister said no rules were broken, 50 fines for breaking the rules and the law have already been issued.
“So there’s already a reasonable case.
“But under the motion… if the motion is passed, the committee will not begin their substantive work until the police investigations are complete.
“So that they will have all of that evidence before them.”
