Sir David Amess - Conservative
I have been your MP since 1997, living in the constituency with my family. Through my regular surgeries I have met thousands of constituents and I have done my best to help them with the issues they have raised. I have always done my best to promote Southend to ensure we receive the maximum amount of national resources. At the same time, I have supported the Conservative-led Coalition Government in its efforts to rescue the British economy from the terrible state of 2010. The economy is now recovering, with 0% inflation, more jobs than ever being created, and falling unemployment. I am asking you to do me the honour of re-electing me as your MP on Thursday, May 7. I would like to continue with my work on behalf of constituents and, just as importantly, I want to support a Conservative government who are the only ones with policies to keep the recovery going. |

Brian Otridge - UKIP
Our Grammar Schools should provide opportunities to Southend’s schoolchildren, not for other areas. UKIP wants a Grammar school in every town and vocational schools for less academic children. UKIP wants Britain to leave the EU so we can control our borders. Once growth is stabilized, we need local residents put first, with affordable rents. UKIP believes in an NHS free at the point of use, for British citizens only: those from abroad must have private health insurance. Space in Southend is squeezed with too much development. UKIP wants reasonable, planned development, mostly on brownfield sites, with matching infrastructure, listening to residents’ concerns. Crime in central Southend twice as high as anywhere else in Essex. We must make our communities safe! The Leigh fishing fleet is hobbled by EU regulations and quotas. Once Britain leaves the EU, we can rebuild the former glory of this industry and create new jobs. |

Julian Ware-Lane - Labour
I want a fairer and more equal society. I want a society where everyone is valued, everyone can contribute. I want hard work rewarded; but I also want recognition the most vulnerable need our support, not contempt. We must cherish public services, especially the NHS. I am disappointed Southend West's Conservative MP refuses to back our hospital. We need more visible policing, and assurance the fire service is being supported. As a councillor, I have seen what cuts are doing to services. Something has to be done about rail fares and roads. It is clear whilst the economy is on the mend, the recovery has not been felt by many. Our homes are all but unaffordable for first-time buyers. We need to tackle greedy energy companies, and do something food banks being used by millions of citizens. The choice is between a party working for the needs of many, as opposed to working for the few. |

Jon Fuller - Green
We will stop the dithering – we will deliver an EU referendum. On the NHS we will repeal the Health and Social Care Act, which damages the health service; and. We will replace it with an NHS Reinstatement Bill that removes the market mechanism. We are the party of fair taxation, and will pay for essential services by introducing a wealth tax on the richest 1%, raise taxes on those earning over £100,000 and introduce the “Tobin Tax” on financial transactions. We will end the war on the young, starting with the abolition of tuition fees. We will ban night flights and ban weekend flights at regional airports before 10am (flights at London City Airport are already banned on Sunday mornings). Climate change is now killing hundreds of thousands of people; a Green vote is your chance to say “Not In My Name!" |

Paul Collins - Lib Dem
I support opportunities for everyone, regardless background and also our precious civil liberties. I am a fervent opponent to Trident and as your MP would not support its replacement with any other nuclear weapon, this money would be much better spent on supporting our armed services. I support the Lib Dems pledge to spend the extra £8bn a year up to 2020 as requested by the NHS. As a Southend family man and a c2c commuter, with three children (one with disabilities), I understand the worries about good education, job opportunities and the prospect of finding homes for our young people. As your MP I would make it a priority to tackle these issues. I make this pledge to the voters, when I am elected as your MP I would remain living in Southend West and continue commuting to London and not have a second home at taxpayers’ expense. |
