A POPULAR pub and nightclub will close for a month as a half a million pound refurbishment takes place.

Bosses have announced that both the Beehive Pub and the Colors nightclub in Southernhay, in Basildon town centre, will close for four weeks to have a “facelift” and “rebrand”.

Both venues are owned by the Stonegate pub company, with the work set to take place between August 7 and September 7.

It comes as Wetherspoon’s bosses confirmed that the Moon and Square pub, located in Market Square, will close for good in September.

The Beehive Pub will be undergoing a refresh, with the biggest gay nightclub in Essex, Colors, having a complete rebrand and relaunch, with the new name being “The Loft”.

Sarah Gage, general manager at the venues, said this is an exciting time for Basildon.

She said: “We are all very excited as it has been a long time coming. It is a fresh, new start.

“The aim is just to make an amazing space for the community to enjoy.

“We all love what we do in hospitality, and it has been a real struggle over the year, but luckily, we work for a great company.

“We now have this opportunity to make the Beehive and the nightclub fresh and new, for the community, who have supported us over the years.

“The pub will still have the ‘proper pub’ feel. It is just getting a facelift as such, whereas the nightclub will be getting a complete rebrand and relaunch.”

The refurbishment is going to cost more than £500,000, bosses confirmed.

Ms Gage also confirmed it will create more jobs as they will be hiring a bigger team to make the change successful.

She said: “We will be wanting to hire a lot more staff in the foreseeable future to make this launch as successful as we can”.

There will be a closing party on August 6 at Colors for the community to say goodbye to the historic nightclub.

With Wetherspoons confirming the Moon and Square will close in September, some punters are concerned they will be without two town centre pubs for at least a week.
