A number of people were searched and more gas canisters seized before making it to the seafront yesterday as new weapons detectors were launched in Southend High Street.
Essex Police officers in Southend deployed its new weapons detection system in the High Street yesterday afternoon and evening.
The state of the art equipment is more than just a metal detector as it looks for large metal mass, indicative of the presence of weapons.

Essex Police is the first force in the country using this equipment on the streets.
As a result, people were searched and more gas canisters were seized before making it to the seafront, and a discarded weapon was found nearby.
