ONE of the first things Una Green did when she became manager of The Castle pub was to bring back the quiz nights.

Having taken on the role in November last year, Una has introduced in a number of regular events which have proved a hit with her guests.

The Hadleigh pub has open mic nights, board games nights, karaoke, televised live sport, and continues to have the popular poker night.

“Our aim is to make the pub a lovely place to be with lots going for everyone to enjoy,” said Una.

“Bringing in regular events has meant we get a real mix of people through the door.”

Guests credit the pub for the attentive service and the way they go the extra mile for people.

“It is a friendly place and we’re like one big family,” said Una.

“Staff member Mary has been here for 16 years and that shows real commitment. We all gel so well and it doesn’tfeel like work to me. Our kitchen team is strong, because of the pandemic it has taken time to build it back up, but we are there now.”

They have BTSport and Sky Sports access, so guests can watch all major sporting events and fixtures live.

“We have two new big screen TVs, one in the restaurant and one in the sports room. With the World Cup coming up we want people to know we’re a great place to see live sport.”

The historic pub has a lot of history behind it walls, as Una has found out.

“It was an old coach house which dates back to 1651. Some of the staff have said they’ve seen ghosts here, butI’ve yetto meet any yet!” laughed Una.

They serve pub classics such as Hunter’s chicken (£7.49) and kids’ meals (£3.99 for children under five).

“Our most popular dishes are fish and gammon. We advise people to ring ahead if they wantto order fish so we can make sure we have their favourite fish in stock.”

There is a vast selection of beers, ciders, and gins, including Gordon’s Sicilian Lemon Gin, and J.J. Whitley Mango and Papaya Gin. Cocktails are on offer all day, every day at two for £7 and include the woo woo, Long Island iced tea, and mojito.

On Saturday the Sarfenders will perform and on Saturday, September 3,it will be KY Jones. Open mic nights are every second Tuesday from 8pm. Tuesday is board games club from 7pm, Wednesday is quiz night where it costs £2 per person from 7.45pm. Thursday is poker nightfrom 7pm. Upcoming karaoke nights are tonight, Friday, September 9, and Friday, September 30.
