PASSIONATE women’s rights activist, Clara James, finally got a Blue Plaque to commemorate her incredible work.

The Canvey islander had so many strings to her bow it is hard to know where to begin.

Born in 1866, she dedicated her life to supporting deprived girls of London industry, even giving away her private income to support them.

She was a local councillor, Justice of thePeace, anactivist on women’s rights as well as founder of Canvey’s WI and Labour party.

After twentymonths of planning,the Blue Plaque was unveiled on August 26 at the Canvey Heritage Centre on Canvey Road.
