MOTORBIKE scramblers riding their bikes illegally through woods in Hockley and Hawkwell are threatening public safety, police officers have warned.
Officers have teamed up with Rochford District Council to try to stop the bikers, who are illegally riding through Hockley Woods and Gusted Hall Wood.
Woodland Watch has been set up so members of the public can record details of any bikes spotted in the woods, so police can track down the owners.
Andrew Hill, police community support officer for the area, said: "We're getting an increasing number of calls about scramble bikes being ridden through the woods in an anti-social and dangerous manner.
"Both Hockley Woods and Gusted Hall Wood are widely used by dog walkers, horse riders and people simply out for stroll. Their safety is being put in jeopardy by thoughtless motorcycle riders.
"The idea is to identify these people and raise awareness of the problem so they understand what they are doing is not allowed.
"We will take positive action against anyone stopped riding through the woods."
Officers have handed out logbooks to people who visit the woods, so they can write down thenumber plates and model and colour details of any bikes or of any vehicles seen offloading bikes.
This information can then be forwarded to Woodlands Watch to help police identify riders and those encouraging them.
Anyone wanting to become involved in Woodlands Watch can call Mr Hill on 0300 333 4444.
