A DAD has launched a company to try to stop youngsters from looking at internet pornography on wireless game consoles.

Dan Makin, 34, from Rochford, thinks parents often don't know devices like the Nintendo Wii and iPod Touch can connect to the internet.

He set up the website www.censorit.com to tackle the problem.

He said: "Often it is the kids who are setting up the wireless internet connection in the home and they may be able to access inappropriate material, either deliberately or by mistake.

"Parents are aware about buying software for computers, but they don't often think about portable devices.

"Parents are buying consoles often without realising they can be connected to the internet through a wireless connection."

Wi-Fi offers unmonitored access to the internet unless computers or portable devices are connected to a service to filter inappropriate content.

Censorit, which began trading on Tuesday, links up to the handheld device before it connects to the internet and can then monitor web browsing.

It then becomes the homepage for internet access and means sites can be filtered. It works for devices such as the Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii and iPod Touch and costs £4 a month.

There is no hardware needed and all connections are done via the internet. The firm has a blacklist of sites which cannot be accessed because of their explicit or offensive content.

Mr Makin, who has a 14-month-old daughter, has spent the last six months developing the business before its launch.

He said: "Because all these devices use different operating systems, it is difficult to write an application which would filter the internet access. Instead, the devices can be connected to the internet through the Censorit website."
