ROCHFORD could get a third supermarket, as new plans have been revealed by the industry giant Tesco.

For many years, the town has been seeking to get a large chain into the town centre to stop residents leaving the town for their shopping, rather than using nearby shops.

A supermarket, opened by Somerfield, was one of the requirements of the new development which is being completed between North Street and the Market Square. Sainsbury's has also gained permission for a small store on the former Warrens garage site, on the corner of Union Lane.

Now, Tesco is seeking planning permission from the district council for a 3,000 sq ft store on the site of a former county council office next to the Sainsburys' site.

The application will be considered by members of the development services committee after the local elections.

Tory councillor for Rochford town, James Cottis, said: "I could not comment on a specific application until we have looked at it in detail.

"However, it does seem a bit strange that after all these years of waiting, three supermarkets now want to come into Rochford."

Rochford Parish Council chairman Maureen Vince said it was important any new building on the site was in keeping with the character of Rochford.

She added: "As far as I know, Tesco is looking at attracting different people to those who use Somerfield. It will be very close to the railway station and commuters are the people who are likely to use Tesco on their way home.

"The Somerfield store is more for people in the town who live and work in Rochford.

"It took a little while to take off, but now it is being used by an increasing number of people.

"My only worry is, despite the increasing population coming to Rochford, whether it will be able to support this number of new stores."

The Echo gave Tesco the opportunity to comment, but they did not get back to us.
