A NEW recycling scheme will start for people in the Rochford area this summer.
Residents will be given two additional bins which will see kitchen leftovers, cardboard and plastics recycled.
The move comes in a bid to reduce some of the 35,000 tons of rubbish which is collected in the area each year and taken to landfill.
Under Rochford's scheme items such as used nappies will have to wait for a fortnightly collection as they are non-recylable. But compostable kitchen waste will be collected weekly.
In a letter to residents on Friday, Rochford District Council said 85 per cent of the waste in wheelie bins can be recycled.
The scheme will see two additional bins given to householders in Rochford. They will be:
- A green bin with a yellow lid for compostables, which includes most kitchen leftovers and garden cuttings
- Existing grey bins will be used for recyclable material. This includes paper, glass and cans, that are currently being added to blue boxes. They will also be used for plastics and cardboards
- A grey bin with a purple lid will also be provided for non-recyclables.
