TRAVELLERS have ruined a village green in Canewdon after setting up camp there.
Three caravans and a trailer were set up behind the village hall, in Lambourne Hall Road, on Sunday and have been told to move by today.
Residents have watched as the travellers' vehicles churned up the grass on the land, owned by the Canewdon Community Association.
Terry Cutmore, leader of Rochford District Council, said: "I have been told they are tearing up the village green. It is very disappointing. That area is normally used for children playing and for Scout groups. It is on private land but we are doing all we can to help."
Shaun Scrutton, head of planning and transportation at Rochford Council said: "Where land is in private ownership, eviction would be with the landowner, but in such cases, the council will work closely with the police and other agencies."
