WESTCLIFF High School for Girls has welcomed a new headteacher who has vowed to build on the “fantastic reputation” of the school and create “independent, resilient and proactive” learners.

Emma Matthews took over as headteacher at the grammar school at the start of the term, after 15 years experience working at top schools.

Mrs Matthews said: “I feel deeply honoured and privileged to lead Westcliff High School for Girls.

“I look forward to helping empower our students to become articulate, courageous and compassionate young women (and men, because of course, we are delighted to welcome boys into our sixth form) who will go onto be the next generation of leaders, enriching their lives and those of others.”
